One of our slowest starts so far. We had arranged to meet Paul, Tracey, Aliesha & Brianna at Covent Gardens Train Station by 12.00pm. We arrived just before 12.00 and proceeded to one of the 3 lifts. Ahead were a mass of people waiting to go up and I decided for the stairs (193 in a spiral ) and left Katie and Sharon waiting. Powered pass everyone to lots of sucking air behind me, moans, people stopping having a break a kids running in different directions. Starting to get dizzy now and finally the top. Turned a corner to be greeted with even more steps. Finally made it to the top out through the gate to be tapped on the shoulder by a very cold Paul. Tracey, Aliesha & Brianna didn't seem to cold. Paul still hasn't adjusted to England Winters even after 11 years. A few minutes later Katie & Sharon arrive sucking in air, Paul thought they were putting it on because I told them they were catching the lift. They didn't want to wait with the masses either.
We decided to grab a coffee and wait for Jason to meet us. Passed a scary living statue painted gold who appeared to be suspended in mid air. After a bit of thought worked out how he was doing it and went around the corner in Covent Gardens. Aware of the pricey tourist traps I checked the prices and coffee seemed to be priced OK. Katie and I received our cappuccino's and ripped off again there must of been an inch of coffee in a large cup and the rest just foam. Jason arrived and we decided to find somewhere for lunch. Jason mentioned a pub he could not find and Brianna made a executive decision to go to Nando's. I wasn't sure about this, much prefer a pub but off we went. It wasn't far and in we enter. Nice reception area but the main dining area was down a spiral step. Wow how good is this place nothing like in Perth. It had a large table the 8 of us fitted and plenty of variety in food. The place was extremely clean and well organised service and great food. Tried a Portuguese beer not bad but will never beat the Germans. After lunch we all head for the Covent Garden Markets. I lasted about 15mins before Paul agreed to find a pub. Found a pub in the markets and headed in. Down more steps into a nice quaint English pub. A little busy but enough room to down a couple of brews with Paul & Jason. Paul was reserved only one cider but by the time we left Jason was on his 3rd.
After everyone else met up with us again at the pub and a few drinks it was time to part ways with Tracey, Paul, Aliesha & Brianna. The 4 of us headed for another coffee before heading off for our 1 hour of Ice Skating in front of Somerset House.
We were booked in at 5.30pm and started to get ready at 5.15pm. We have seen a few ice skating rings on our current travels but these are the most magical. The area is amazing Somerset house is nicely lit up with Xmas trees ablaze. Now we are all booted up and raring to go. We finally hit the ice. It took me 40mins before I finally did hit the ice but a very nice Ice marshall young lady assisted me to my feet. I haven't ice skated for 25 years so one tumble in an hour I think was acceptable. In the mean time Jason & Katie are doing well a bit wobbly but never tumbled. Sharon was still hanging on to the rail after 45mins while most of the first timers had their legs and were off. I was surprised by the lack of experience skaters there was. I think when you go to warmer countries like Australia they are better skaters. Sharon finally leaves the rail holding onto Katie's hand. After a hour and sore feet and shines we head off for dinner to a Mexican Restaurant called Wahacca.
Once again nice service and filling food we talked about what to do the next day. I mention hiring a car and driving on Monday to Stonehenge and Bath. On New Years eve we can head off to Cotswold's. Everyone agrees and once back at the apartment we book a car for the next day to be picked up from Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

Day 22 Retail therapy ( Katie & Sharon) / Tough Mudder ( Jason & Evan)
Well we finally got out of the apartment about 1/2 later than intended. I think we are all feeling tired. Met Jason over the road from Oxford Circus station and headed off to a waffle place for Breakfast. Evan and Katie had waffles with Banana, strawberries and nutella, Jason had strawberries and maple syrup, I had a croissant with nutella. Drinks were lovely....Smoothies and cappuccinos.
Once finished we met up with Jade and Leon outside Bond Street station , hugs all around and we all parted ways. Leon to go home, Evan & Jason off on their forest walking adventure, and us girls SHOPPING!!!! SALES!!!!
We went into Debenhams , Katie bought two tops ....:)
House of Frasier ...so many shoes...Katie was in heaven. She even bought boots...didn't even look at the price and went straight to the counter with them and handed over the card!! lol...I'm thinking a complete re packing of her suitcase!!! lol
Next up was John Lewis.....I bought two jumpers for 2 for the price of 1, Italian cashmere cotton ...1 for Evan and 1 for Jason....sadly nothing for me...But I could hear a collected sigh from Evan that the credit card wasn't empty....But there is still plenty of time. It was lovely having the time with Jade and really appreciate it more because she wasn't feeling 100% .
We left Jade at 4.30 as she had other things to do. Made plans to hopefully catch up on the day we leave to come home.
Katie and I made our way back to the apartment to unload, change shoes and then rest a bit as Katie's knees were a tad sore....then let the boys know that we were on our way. They were in a Pub....tough life!! Katie took the lead with the trains we were taking.....I kept Jason up to date by text as to where we were.....I did however ask during the trip are you sure its mansions that we get off instead of staying on the Piccadilly line to Manor house???? Katie was positive it was Mansions...another text to Jason that we had nearly arrived at Mansions house and got a reply with WHAT???? Katie had indeed stuffed up....we should have stayed on the Piccadilly to Manor house station...lol So get off and find the right line and turn up an hour later than what we should have.....:) Off to Jason's house for dinner and Dr Who.
Evan & Jason's Bit
After a quick hello to Leon & Jade and asking if Leon wanted to go with Jason and I for a nice stroll through Epping Forrest he declined. (it turned out to be a good decision for him). Jason decided to stop at Stratford Staion to look for a Kindle Paperwhite for part of his Xmas present. There is a Westfield shopping centre there that was built for the Olympic games last year. It is right next to the Olympic Stadium and Pool area. This shopping centre is five stories and the largest shopping centre in Europe. Not bad for an Australian company. After trying 3 shops we gave up no one had any stock apparently very popular Christmas present this year. Back to the station and on our way to Epping. We past villages and farm land asked Jason how far out we were it is less distance than it is to our home from Perth to Wellard amazing use of land in a high population city. Arrived at Epping it was now 1.30pm. Walked for about 20 mins before reaching the edge of Epping Forrest. Epping Forrest was handed over by Queen Victoria for public use. It was her hunting grounds which she had never been to. The only time she was there was to officially hand it over to the public. It is one of only 3 old growth forests left in England and one of the largest (sounds great doesn't it). As most people are probably aware London had about 40mm of rain lately. About 1/2 of what we could get at home in a day of solid rain.
When we finally reach an entrance we had to cross a cricket field to find a hidden path on the other side. The cricket ground was grass covering mud and my first concern of what might lay ahead. Found the path which was just mud and proceeded to find the main path. Once we were on one of the many pathways it did improve to the occasional quagmire. It is a nice walk which reminded me of many medieval films which has very similar settings. The occasional creek with small bridges would be a great walk in summer without the slush.
We were trying to head towards the centre of the forrest where there is a information centre and pub. Occasionally you come across a carpark with a map of the area and your only reference apart from map boy jnr who assures me he knows where he is going. After an hour we come across the second map of the day and realise we are heading away from the pub. We need to go straight and head right on the next path we see. After a short walk I notice a path to the right and said this is where we need to go. Map boy jnr disagrees and we continue straight. After another 15 mins walking come to the end of the path and he realises we should have turned right. I now take control and we head off on another path that was skirting the edge of the forrest. The pathway is muddy but at least we are not in the middle of an unknown area. Pass a few people and come out near some houses. I asked a lady walking her dog where the information centre was and she looks at me blankley. It was a very long walk where we needed to go. She asked where we really needed to go and said we want to finish at Chingford. Looks at us now concerned gave us directions mentioned all the mud and said don't forget it will get dark shortly. Now I'm starting to get concerned but off we go. A lot more mud more people and a nice little bridge great finally on the right track. The path stops after the bridge and could not find any pathway to continue on. Heard some people over the ridge and headed in that direction. Finally found a well defined path and continued in the direction of the setting sun. The pathway came to another intersection and Jason said we need to turn right. OK I will put my faith in you again but note everyone else is going straight ahead. We came to another road crossed over where there was new fencing and Jason could not remember seeing this before but we will press on. Eventually he relaxed and said he knew exactly where we were. Came to a T junction and said turn right and we will come to the information centre and pub so off we go. The other direction is to Chingford. Five minutes down the path to a sinking sun I told him to give up and head back to Chingford. So off we go in the opposite direction and pass everyone we had already power walked past to some smirky looks. I asked Jason how much longer he says about 1/2 an hour I did not realise we were that far away. So pick up the pace and Jason is confident we are going in the right direction. 20 mins latter we come across a 4 way intersection and he looks concerned. If Jason looks concerned think how I now feel with the light fading fast. He tells me to stay where I was and he heads of down one off the tracks to get his bearings. He comes back with uncertainty in his eyes and decide to head straight. Passed a young couple pushing a pram which amazed me with the amount of mud. I asked them if this was the track to Chingford and I get another blank stare. Then something switched on in his mind and assured us we were going in the right direction. With very little light left and renewed confidence of we fly to be confronted with the worse amount of mud ever. It was a field of mud but had no choice so off we slosh and finally reach Chingford in the dark. Found our train station and Jason was staving now, we had had no food since our waffles for breakfast. Jason says there is a supermarket just up the road. We pass a pub and kept going after 5 mins asked were this supermarket was he is still saying not far. Saw a fish and chip shop and made the executive decision to stop here. Bought some chips and sat down to eat them. Jason checked the train time table and found out we had just missed one and next one was in half an hour. They should run every 15 mins but due to maintenance the time had changed. No problem back to the pub we passed and a quick pint. Cheapest pint so far. Outside of London they are cheaper 2.65 pounds. 1.99 pound breakfast.
After the pint back on the train to meet Katie and Sharon at Manor House. A few line changes and we were there near Jason Home. Got a message from Sharon that they were leaving shortly. Great time for another pint at Jason's local. Price of the beer now going up 4.50 pounds. Downed the pint and the next message from Sharon was they had 8 stops before reaching us. Jason realises straight away they were on the wrong train and heading for Mansion House. Jason is 17 stops away not 8. Time for another pint then and get ready to meet them at the Subway exits. There is 7 exits and had no idea which ones they were arriving at so waiting on the corner like a call girl they finally appear out of one and we are off to Jason's for a chinese dinner.
Once finished we met up with Jade and Leon outside Bond Street station , hugs all around and we all parted ways. Leon to go home, Evan & Jason off on their forest walking adventure, and us girls SHOPPING!!!! SALES!!!!

Day 21 All trains lead to Purley
Our last breakfast in Salzburg before Terri & Greg head off to Belgium and the rest of us back to London. Sharon, Jason, Duncan & I walked Terri & Greg over to their train before leaving at 10.00am it was only a 5min walk from the hotel. On the way back checked to see what time the buses ran to Salzburg Airport and back to the hotel which is only 100m away to get ready to check out. Walked back to the bus station bought our ticket 1.80 euro each and the bus arrived. 20 mins bus ride out to the airport short walk into the terminal a few minutes wait and checked in our luggage. We had a 2 hour wait before we boarded the plane for a 1.5 hour flight back to London. We worked on our blog had coffee and some eats and time to board our plane. Customs check on our passports. Duncan, Sharon & Katie got through and Jason and I were in another queue. Our first problem of the day the customs officer asked where my stamp was in my passport when I left London. I said it should be in there but he could not find it. Asked what day I left and said could not remember. I showed him Jason's passport with his stamp and said I left the same time with 3 other people. He eventually found the faded stamp in the book and let me through. On the bus to take us to the plane and entered through the rear of the plane. Duncan was up the front in club, Jason was on a window seat next to Sharon. Katie and I was behind, Katie on the window seat me in the middle next to some old guy. Katie was starting to get very anxious in a small plane and held my hand very tight as we took off. Not a bad flight but a little bumpy landing and a crushed hand once again from Katie. We arrived on time and set our watches back an hour to 2.20 pm. We needed to get to our apartment in Earls Court by 5.00 pm because there is no one in attendance after this time. Jason had pre-purchased our tickets to get a train from Gatwick airport to Victoria Train station then a tube to Earls Court. A trip that would normally take 45mins plenty of time to get to the apartment.
After a long walk to customs and a 15 min wait to get through we proceeded to pick up our luggage and say good by to Duncan he was heading back to Attleborough. Jason new there was work being done on the line we needed to take so our train was not an express just a normal train that was going to take us longer. We needed to catch the shuttle to the other side of the station so off we went. Jason found out that there had been a landslide so our train to Victoria Station had been cancelled and coaches were going to take us there. Joined a long queue to catch a coach and Sharon was getting concerned we wouldn't make the apartment in time. She rang them up to say we were delayed and they said there will be a porter available to let us in. We finally got on a coach and found out it was not going to Victoria Station but another one called East Grinstead and then catch the train from there. We arrived at the station and there was two platforms and a lot of disorientated people. There was a train at platform 2 heading for Victoria Station. You needed to walk up the stairs and over to the other side. There was an angry announcement over the speaker for everyone to hurry up and get on the train no one could move because the gates were closed. The train left. Another train arrived at platform 1. Another angry announcement to say the next train to Victoria Station is leaving at Platform 2. So as we approached the train staff, one is telling platform 1 is heading to London bridge. Another train staff is saying it is headed to Victoria station so we get on the train at platform 1. All the staff are stressed and no one knows what is going on, the only calm people are the patrons. The train leaves and it is headed for London Bridge not where we want to go. Jason works out if we get off at East Croyden we can catch a train to Victoria Station. The time now is 5.00 2 hours 40mins after landing. We got off at platform 4 the next train was to Victoria Station arriving in 3 minutes. Great from there only one tube to Earls Court instead of 3 from London Bridge because of maintenance. Next thing the board changes to correction no longer a train to Victoria Station. Next train in is to Purley no good. The fat controller went off to see what happened to the train to Victoria. He never came back with an answer and all the staff had disappeared. Another correction next train to Victoria is delayed by 25 mins. Next train in is for Purley all those wanting to go to London Bridge go to platform 2. By now Sharon is getting annoyed Katie is absolutely ropeable Jason & I are just laughing with the total disorganization. He tells us this happens all the time and is the reason he is always late for work. They promise a train is coming next thing it is delayed. Apparently to many private run transport companies not working together. After more corrections on the board and more delays finally a train to Victoria. The train was absolutely packed and we are trying to get on with all our luggage. Finally settle in and then there is an announcement that the train is now going to London Bridge and not Victoria. We should have stayed on the first train to London Bridge we were on instead of waiting 40 mins on East Croyden Station. Katie and Sharon said we should have caught a taxi but a taxi from East Croyden Station would have been about 100 pounds ( 200 aussie dollars ) Jason just told them it is all part of the travelling experience. We were thinking of getting a taxi from London Bridge instead of taking 3 more trains back to Earls Court. When we got to London Bridge total chaos everyone wanting taxis so back onto the trains. My oyster card would not let me through not enough money on it. Looked at the ticket office and ticket machines crowds lined up and snaking around barricades. Knowing about there train system managed to find another machine hidden around a corner no one there put money on my card and off to the Jubilee line to catch a train to Bakerloo line at Waterloo. These stations have plenty of stairs and no escalators so Jason carried Katie's suitcase downstairs. This is why Sharon's suitcase was destroyed last year and we decided to use backpacks instead. They maybe inconvenient taking them off and on but is the best way to move around in cities full of stairs and we have found plenty on this trip. Next change was the Piccadilly Line at Piccadilly Circus to get to Earls Court. Once we were at Earls Court more stairs that Katie had to carry her suitcase up. We headed to the a exit expecting to turn around and head out at Earls Court Road not to be, more work being done and we had to go the long way out to get to the apartment. Total travel time 4.5 hours from Gatwick to travel 40 km.
We signed in, Paul the porter was very helpful and we were shown our room very promptly. It is a different room from last time but far superior no road noise separate Toilet & bathroom and more roomy. The lift is small and can't carry everything at once so Jason and I stayed downstairs and talked to Paul. He said to us it was great to see us laughing about our experience. We told him Sharon & Katie could not see the funny side of it.
We decided to just buy burgers, beer & wine and have it in the apartment and get ready for more adventures to follow.

Day 20 Boxing Day
We had to meet at the lobby by 8.20 am to be pick up by 8.30 to be taken out for the day for a sleigh ride about 1.5 hours drive from Salzburg. The bus took us through Salzach Valley and past many quaint villages. We went through 5 tunnels and saw another amazing fortress perched up on a mountain. We ascend the Steirische Ramsau to the base of an alpine glacier the Dachstein. In the small village we stopped and had a 2 1/2 hour stop for a wander and lunch at the hotel before heading for our sleigh ride. Jason and I walked around the village and took photos of the mountains, building and ski slopes. The village has a population of 2000 and accommodation for 6000. At 1.05 we were back on the bus to be taken to our awaiting sleigh.
The bus stopped and everyone was looking around. Should we get off? I think was going through everyone's mind. Finally one group decided to get off and the rest followed. Greg kindly offers me the use of his waterproof pants. A little big, but they will do! Our guide then turns around and says, when the horses and sleigh arrive, "The south Africans!" Off they go. "The seven!" Our small group looks at each other, is that us? Yes! into the sleigh we go.
All neatly sitting in our seats, a cute little blanket laid over our laps, guide in our carriage and off we go. The sleighs were a four wheel drive/proper sleigh. So when we were on bits where there was no snow, the driver changed it to the wheels and on the snow back to the wooden skates. Two horses per carriage and the views all the way around were spectacular. Throw in a little singing and we have a very happy Aussie carriage.
We stopped after about 45 minutes while the horses had a chance to catch their breaths and for all of us to get a hot chocolate or coffee. Although, just off to the side of the little cafe/pub was a hill covered in snow. Duncan and Greg decided that the lure of gluwien/hot chocolate was greater than the joy of playing in the snow.
So the rest of us headed for this hill. Yay!!! Snow fights, rolie polies, running up and down, a successful snowman later and our half an hour break was up.
Back to the horses and sleigh we go. More spectacular views of skiers, mountains, doggies and beautiful houses we were back at the bus. Those of us that played in the snow were thoroughly exhausted. Although, we did get a few snores out of the two that went and drank in the pub. Too bad we didn't get a video.
Back to the hotel to go and get ready for dinner. Our last night together before we part ways.
Jason found a brewery on Trip Adviser that was given 4 1/2 star rating.... about 1 km away from the hotel. When we left there was light rain but no one was concerned. Found the brewery after walking through back alleys. It was a micro brewery with its own German Style Beer Hall. When we walked in the first thing we noticed was very sticky floors and three large halls 2 non smoking & 1 smoking. Found a large table with only 2 people seated there and asked to join them they obliged. We didn't know what to do whether it was table service or self serve. I decided to do a recky and work out what to do. In the hallways they have small food stalls set up much like our food halls back home. Just decide what you want buy and take back to your table. Working out the beer purchase took me longer. They have shelves full of 500ml & 1000ml steins. You grab the size and how many you want and go to one of the two cashiers. Tell them how much you want and hand over the money and they give you a receipt. I wanted to buy three 1000ml steins one for Jason, Greg & myself. It cost 3 euro for 500ml & 6 euro for 1000ml. You can also buy cooldrink and souveniers from the cashier they just put it on the receipt. You next go and hand over the steins to the guy pouring the beer from an oak barrel so no gas in this beer. There is only one beer available so no choice. The beer pours very quickly and takes only a few seconds to fill up three 1 litre steins hence the sticky floors they all over flow onto the floors. With the three halls filled to probably 300 people in each room all wanting to buy beer there is no queue this system is very efficient. When you go back to fill your steins they have a water font there with 6 outlets that have motion sensors to turn on the water to rinse out your stein. The beer was great and not very strong so after two one litre steins we didn't feel very tipsy. After this fantastic beer hall experience it was back to the hotel and get ready for leaving tomorrow back to our various destinations.

Day 19 Christmas Day
Merry Christmas to all....Hugs and kisses all round.
After breakfast we found out that the cable car up to the mountain was cancelled as it was too windy. so we thought we would try it a bit later.
Walked to the Mirabelle palace and gardens but the palace was closed. So after a browse through the gardens we headed into the old city to make our way to the panoramic view of the city .
Before we got there we decided to stop at a cafe and have some lunch .....Well Katie had lunch the rest of us bar one pigged out on cake.....someone amongst us had two (No names will be mentioned) !! so we were feeling better after being watered and fed....off to the lift near the Modern art building. Fantastic views again and it was such a beautiful day.
Like a little fort and such lovely little walk ways through foressted bits....after copious amounts of photos ( got to love digital camera's)
we headed down the stairs to go get the bus to the Cable car...didnt have long to wait and the bus took 1/2 hour to get there.
Carpark was empty so we were worried that it might not be opened....but Phew it was. It looked like we were going to be a small group going up in the cable car...but just before we got on, a tour bus of grannies and grandads turned up....packed in like sardines....Not much fun for Katie!! But she did well.
It was a great trip up and the views ...WOW!! The best bits were going over the support piles and it lurches forward...WHEEEEEEE!! I know many didn't like it...
Once up the top we headed out side to walk in the snow ...very slippery in bits.
Greg didn't go as far as us and I didn't go as far as the rest. But had fun in the snow and watching others slipping and sliding in their groups....so many didn't have any good shoes, so that made me more amazed how they were'nt on their bums the whole time!!
Jason, Evan, Terri and I walked about halfway along the walkway. Slipping and sliding, I was doing really well until one hill....Jason poised at the base waiting with camera ready....WHOOPS!! Down I go!
Views from the top of the halfway peak are absolutely stunning! Germany on one side, Austria on the other. Rather weird seeing a borderline thats not really a borderline without the lines of a map. Anyway, snowballs! softer snow, easier to manipulate into a ball. Mwahaha, one at Terri, one at Evan, Evan back at me, Terri to Jason....and so on. Much fun!
Snowman time!!!! Jason made the great idea on doing it where another person had made a snowangel. So off we go. Terri headed off back towards Sharon after a few happy snaps, Evan stayed on the higher ground looking at us. Few snowballs and smiles later, off Jason and I go down this deceptively soft snow. Whoops...Jason goes down to knee deep....And you know what that means for me!!! Waist deep. HAHAHA smiles all around even though we are soaked! Snowman time! Ha, not so great snow. Jason got about halfway through the first ball before it broke, you really need freshly fallen snow.
But the hightlight? WHITE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!
By this time, we have almost hit the 3.45 mark and the last decent is at 4pm. Time to head back. So off I trot leaving Jason and Evan in my wake. Then much to my surprise I come across Sharon and Terri Sliding down the hill on their BUMS!!!!!
It was better than falling a lot....the down side was having a numb bum until the hotel.
Back to the hotel and we had showers and got ready for our picnic in the lift lobby bit on our floor....we had the whole floor to ourselves.
The view was amazing....lights everywhere. Pillows and doona's thrown down and the food spread around. Drinks opened, champagne poured and photo's taken......Perfect meal to end a wonderful Christmas day.

Day 18 Christmas Eve
After Breakfast we decided to do the laundry at a laundry mat and also to get food for Christmas Day.
Jason, Katie, Greg and I hefted our bags just over 1 km to get them clean as the hotel were asking a lot. It took 1 1/2 hours....so much cleaner and modern than the ones at home. we even had a coffee or hot chocolate for 1 euro....out of a machine...it even dropped a spoon in at the end. The machines are fully automated and include the powder, softener in the price. So instead of costing 450 Euro it only cost us 25 euro = WIN!!
Duncan, Terri and Evan went and bought finger food and drinks for our lunch or dinner for Christmas Day as not many places would be open.....
We met back at the hotel about 10.30 and headed to the info centre just over the road at the train station. Terri & Duncan had already been in for some info and wanted us to check it out and be happy with her ideas. We decided for today that we would get the Hop ON Hop Off bus ( much to Jason's disgust which we now called the Ho Ho Bus) and we would see as much as we could . Evan Greg and Jason would get off and do their thing as they weren't as interested in the sound of Music things like us females. We also bought the Salzburg ticket for Christmas day as this would give us free Bus rides and also entrance into many things for free. We also booked our Boxing day excursion for a day trip into the country for a horse and sleigh ride.
Once all that was done we could start the day. Duncan went off to do his own thing. We waited for the bus. Photos with Jason in front of the bus as he really didn't want to do this. We listened to the commentary on channel 2 but then learnt that if we wanted the sound of music commentary we needed to change to channel 10....Katie Terri and I did!!! Evan lasted one stop he preferred to listen to Mozart.
Was wonderful to get the special bits to do with the movie and see the places. Can't wait to watch Sound of Music again.
We stopped at a few places for photos but this was one slow hop on hop off bus that we got off at the zoo. We then learnt that Jason had fallen asleep..I think to prove his point!!!! lol
The boys went off and us girls walked into the Christmas markets and wandered...mainly for something to eat and drink. Finally found something. After we found the Pavilion they used in the movie for the 16 going on 17 song.
We wandered through the park and then back through the markets, where we saw some farm animals before going into an area with fountains . Nearly got locked in as they were shutting everything as being Christmas Eve, its their big day. back to the bus stop and Katie has lost her ticket!! Not long after Jason and Evan join us. Greg's gone missing. Found out he has gone back to the hotel. Evan and Jason got off not far down the road to continue their travels.... We girls headed back into the Old City and meandered through the Christmas Markets, Stopped and watched children ice skate....and found some rather nice donuts before heading back to the hotel walking through the little alley ways and then following the river. Back at the hotel we waited for the boys to turn up and then got ready for our Christmas Eve dinner at the Sister Hotel to the one we are staying in .
Evan and Jason's Travels
After leaving the girls at the Sound of Music Pavilion the 3 of us ended up in the Christmas markets. I was after food and toilet and Greg wandered off not sure what he was looking for. Did not take long and he was lost to the crowds so Jason and I decided to leave the markets and find more interesting things to explore. We wandered around the gardens taking photos of the statues and ponds. We amused ourselves by watching a white swan walking on the ice until he fell through with a cracking of the ice. He was very graceful crashing through the ice and slowly trying to reach the water before swimming off. We then looked around for the highest point and noticed a building on the hill and headed up in the general direction. Very step path and thought Greg would not have appreciated our hike. Once on the top great views over looking farmland and mountains. Then noticed a higher point and went up there also more great views.
On our decent found a map that showed and amphitheater off the map didn't no how far but decided to pick up the pace and head off. We came across a set of steps descending down into what looked like an old quarry which we presumed was the amphitheater.
Once down it was an amazing labyrinth of caves and steps carved into the granite rock face we thought it the high lite of the day. Checked the time of the next Ho Ho bus and quickly took off back to the Sound of Music pavilion before getting back on the bus with a few minutes to spare when we met up with Terri, Sharon & Katie but no Greg. Sent Greg a message and he was back at the hotel enjoying a beer.
On the bus and Jason and I decided to get of at the next stop to wander around. Passed a cafe that sells beer and thought it would be a great stop. Exited the bus to find out being Christmas eve they were shut and it was a private function. We were at another palace which was also used for the sound of music. Decided to walk back to the previous stop and check out all the villagers that surround the area. Back on the bus and got off this time near Mozart's walkway over the river.
Had a wander then walked back to the hotel to get ready for our Christmas eve dinner.
We were to be driven by taxi to another hotel because the one we were staying in did not have enough people wanting Christmas Eve dinner. It was a short drive to there sister hotel & Symphonie Restaurant. This was a 5 star hotel that looked out over the river Salzach.
When we arrived at the hotel we were welcomed is there lounge area with a glass of champagne the only included liquid for the whole night. It was a silver service and a seven coarse meal. It was more classy than the hotel we were staying at so it was a special night. As I said no liquid was supplied so we had to pay for all the water, wine, beer & coffees the cost was 170 euro. After dinner Terri & Greg caught the taxi back to the hotel, Sharon & Katie to midnight mass, Duncan just wandered and Jason and I walked back to the hotel.
Duncan stayed with Katie and I until the masses started moving to the doors.....it was like trying to get through the doors to Boxing Day sales in Myer!! So rude and what we both thought thoroughly disrespectful behavior for a church. People pushing right pass you and cramming in on both sides and then running and pushing to get a pew. We walked fast and managed to get a pew to sit down. Once all the seats were taken we stated to see older women standing and no one offering them their seats.....Katie was first to give hers up and not long after I did...to thank yous and Merry Christmas. We felt much better about ourselves once we did!! We had a choir sing and then the procession of the priests and then all the hoopla in German....we also had a pipe organ playing and a orchestra up in the balconies behind us. It started at 11.30 ...we lasted to 12.30am....Katie because of the red wine from Dinner, Me because of my very cold feet!!
Walked out and straight away got a taxi...five mins later ( driver thought he was in the Indy 500) back at the hotel. Up in 5 1/2 hours...night night

Day 17 Goodbye Munchen Hello Salzburg
We agreed to an early breakfast as we wanted to check out by 8.30. The train we picked was 9.27 but was actually 9.35am. We wanted to get there before lunch. We picked an express one which was good as it only took 1 1/2 hours. We arrived at the train and boarded and put our luggage in the racks and Jason said sit anywhere.... so we found two table seats for 8 people and got cossy. Later we found out that above our seats it said reserved, when the people came to sit down at them so up we got, and tried to find seats that weren't reserved until after Salzburg. This meant that we were all split up....we were a bit grumpy at Jason as we had open tickets and I think this prevented him from locking in seats for us.
We arrived, got our luggage. Dragged Greg and Evans off as we didn't know where they were.....Evan panicked as he couldn't find his and raced off to another carriage....we finally told him we had his bag, we got told you could have told me!! We said we only just saw you running off....anyhoo we made it . Off to the hotel....Which was lovely and literally just over the road from the train station. Our rooms weren't ready yet so we put all our luggage in a holding area near reception and looked at brochures to see what was on offer. We found one for the cable car up the mountain side and set off to the bus . We didn't get the right one and got off once Jason realised that we would also have to take a train as well to get to the cable car. As we would be running out of daylight we decided to leave it for tomorrow. So walked back the way the bus came and headed to this castle/ fortress up the hill over looking the old and new city. Up loads of hills and steps....I tell you who needs a gym....buns of steel on this trip!!
Views as we went were just amazing and agree that Salzburg is just so beautiful. So different to Munich and far less people 150,000 instead of 1.3 million. We missed the bit to get the venicular to the top so more hills to get our ticket. and wait ...more inclines!!
We all agreed to lunch and a much needed drink....So cafe/restaurant was the first stop. Ladies toilet no view, Males toilet fantastic view ( going by Evans photo not from going in there) . Once watered and fed we set off to see what the Fesung Hohensalzburg had to offer. First stop was the dungeon tour and look at the battlement areas.....Once outside we had 360 degree look out over the City.Snow capped Mountains surrounding the city...breathe taking.
Katie and I went out earlier than the others and I took a picture of her on a sleigh. The others joined us shortly. .
Once down we went into the various Museums. through another gift store ( Amber jewellery) and out to the Venicular to go down to the bottom....At the bottom Terri and Greg went off to the hotel as Greg had had enough.
The rest of us meandered through the Christmas Markets,
I actually think these ones are better and have loads more different things...once again so many wooden things that I'm not sure I would be able to get back into Australia. Made our way back to the hotel through gorgeous side streets and over a beautifully lit bridge with padlocks over it....gorgeous view when looking back at the City.
Along the river we walked and finally got there....grabbed our bags and up to our rooms to shower and change. We were meeting in 1/2 hour to go find some dinner as we found out that the restaurant upstairs was closed due to a function.
Found a pizaa place on a corner five minutes from the hotel. Katie had a beef soup with pancake strips in it, Jason Spaghetti Bolonaise and Evan Duncan and I had pizza...Duncan and I were going to share one....but with one bite of it my mouth was on fire and needed a very cold drink to calm it down.....we decided it was the sauce.....so I ordered another one...Evan was worried I would only eat one piece....Proved him wrong and ate three!! lol
Paid our bill and headed back so we could do some blogs as we were falling behind with them.....bed by 11pm.
We arrived, got our luggage. Dragged Greg and Evans off as we didn't know where they were.....Evan panicked as he couldn't find his and raced off to another carriage....we finally told him we had his bag, we got told you could have told me!!
Day 16 Dachau
After Breakfast and finally catching up with our newest member to join our group, Duncan!! We headed up to our rooms to get ready to head out to Dachau.
Caught the train there and then got on a very crowded bus to make our way to the memorial site. Katie was doing ok with the travelling but the closeness of everyone was just getting to her as we arrived...rushed her off to catch her breath. Waited for the crowd to disburse before heading to the info desk to grab a map and to find out if we needed a audio guide.
After taking directions from the helpful guide we headed off to the auditorium to watch the movie on Dachau but with Jason leading us (Map boy jnr) we made our way to the back of the building where there was no access. So we missed that one... We decided to to see the 12.30 one.
Every one seemed to split up and go off in all directions. Some of us made our way back to the first sign to start reading the information....very annoying when those that have the audio guides stand right in front of the boards and you can't read them or see the pictures. GRRRR
Terri and I were separated from Evan and Katie at one point as we took in the slabs where all the barracks were and the stone pillars of the fence surrounding the camp....by this stage I was getting upset. I felt a lot of souls around me and as much as I know they should always be remembered for there unnecessary sacrifice its still hard. You would have to be made of stone not to be affected.
We gradually caught up with Katie and Evan and made our way to see the movie. This was very hard to watch . But I did. Jason felt like fainting while watching some of it and Katie couldn't watch most of it and had to look away. I was really upset and crying by the time it finished and I needed a big hug by the time we walked out....Katie and I couldn't do anymore and decided to go and sit in the cafeteria....we had something to eat, which made me feel very bad about eating when they had so little. It took a while to calm down but we talked and then made our way to the book shop....A few I am going to look up on amazon.

After leaving a very upset Sharon I went through the museum that showed after 1st world war to the rise of Hitler and during his rein. It was getting crowded inside and decide to venture outside. I met up with Jason and we proceeded to one of the reconstructed barracks. They showed the bedding and ablution area. Next we walk passed where all the old footings of the barracks were and proceeded to the end of the compound. They have created memorials and small churches for the Jewish and catholic religions. The catholic church has a sermon once a month here. We wandered down to where the SS barracks had been reconstructed but was only allowed in a small area. Next was to the first crematorium which was built when the compound was used again in 1933. The camp was originally built in the first world war. By 1942 the small crematorium could not cope with the cremations so a larger 6 burner one was built. They piled the bodies into these 3 at at time and ran 24 hours a day. By the end of the war they had no coal so the bodies were just piled up and buried in mass graves. The camp records show there was about 230,000 people had been held at the camp over a 12 year period and used for labor in Farming, Textiles and munitions. Only 32,000 were accounted for at the end of the war. The crematorium also had a gas chamber but records show it was never used for mass killings. Jason and I went for a walk around the forested area which showed where the ashes of bodies were buried and where they had there firing squads. It also showed the ditch where the blood would pool after being shot. It is a very upsetting area but as a human race we still have not improved it still happens today throughout the world. I did not take any photos it did not feel appropriate. We had decided after the movie to all meet up again at 2.30pm and walk back to the train station on the roads that the interned were forced to walk on once they had left the train. Once we were all on the train we decided to find a nice place for dinner and try and finish on a higher note than we all felt at the moment for our last night in Munchen.
Once back at the hotel Jason & I did a recon and found some more Christmas markets and a genuine Bavarian restaurant and decided this is where we will all have dinner. After Jason and I went back to the hotel we told everyone this is where we are going. We left for the markets & dinner about 6.30 and had a nice walk around more Christmas stalls and onto the Restaurant. It was a nice cossy place with the best food and service so far on this trip. Everyone had a great time and back to the hotel for packing the next day. Except Duncan, Greg and myself we propped up the hotel bar for a while.

Day 15 Post office, shitty morning, Third Reich tour and another castle
Katie & Sharon wanted to go to the post office and send off their hordes of stuff. Found a free WiFi hot spot outside the post office and sent off the previous blogs. Katie, Jason, Terri & Greg went off and did a Third Reich tour of the town. Sharon and I wasted our time by looking for things to purchase without much luck. Went to maccas for free WiFi and coffee to send off more blogs and check emails. With time running out we headed off to our meeting place to wait. We reach the allotted time for waiting and sent the others a text message when they did not arrive. They were still on their tour and asked us to meet them at the Central Train station. There is 1.3 million people in Munchen they were all in the Mall that day. Finally pushed through the crowds and made our way to the station and found the rest buying up old bank notes. The 4 of them had a great Third Reich tour.
Had lunch of Burritos and caught the tram to Nimphemburg Palce of King Louis Joseph, King Ludwig the 1st, King Maximilian and King Ludwig the 2nd, and all of their families and courtiers.
The palace was larger than any of us expected complete with frozen ponds and white swans. We went for a tour through a small part of the palace and out to the gardens. The gardens were styled on Versailles not as vast but still a lot of forest that Katie, Jason & myself wandered through while the others were having a break at the cafe in the gardens. We caught the tram back to the centre of Munchen another walk through the Christmas gardens and to our meeting place to join a beer tour for a 3 1/2. It must of been a good group of people as it lasted for 5 1/2 hours.
We started at Augustener which first brewed in 1386. Had a pint each except Sharon and our guide explained the history of beer to us. Next Paulaners for a light meal and a couple more pints of their beers. This was a functioning micro brewery and had a tour of the premises with the guide explaining all the steps of brewing. I did learn something new the Germans when they brew either a lager or a wheat beer they are brewed at the correct temperatures which I expected Lager being 6-8 degrees wheat beer at 18 degrees. But they are only in the fermenting vat for a short time and then transferred to another vat that is set to 2.5 degrees and left for 5 weeks. The vat releases small amounts of co2 but holds most in the beer and no added co2. So all the German beer is lightly natural carbonated. Next stop was the world famous Hofbrauhaus. This beer house has been going since 1589 by the Duke of Baveria and it is well known for Adolf Hitler having his first major public speaking from here. Adolf was a teetotaler and apparently he waited for the crowds in the beer house which can hold 2000 people at the time to get rather merry and then he started out quiet and built to his rallying crescendo. So with the help of steins and his famous rallying cry the future was set. Our guide Roy who happens to be from Melbourne mentioned in the past the beer house was that popular you would never leave your seat in case someone else sat down. So they never left when requiring to relieve themselves that just urinated on the floor. When you go into the toilets they have a stainless steel sink in a cubicle which is chest height. This if for puking in after drinking lots of 1 litre steins. If you are a regular drinker here and have been continuously coming at the same day for more than five years you get your own coasters and table. If anyone else is sitting on your table when you arrive they have to vacate. Jason, Katie, Greg & myself all ordered 1 lite steins the smallest they have. Jason was proud of himself he finished before his uncle Greg. Katie could not drink hers so she shared it between Greg and Jason. Jason foolishly challenged Greg to a sculling contest he lost but was very merry afterwards. After a great beer drinking night headed back to the hotel with a very loud Jason, oh well Katie's problem tonight.

Day 14 Castles and Snow
So after breakfast we met in the lobby to meet up and make our way to the train station under the hotel. We needed to make our way to the Central train station. The meeting point for the tour was over the road...
We picked the first bus and after handing over our voucher we made our way upstairs and got comfy on the bus. We had a presentation from the guide with what was to happen during the course of the day. We passed beautiful country side after leaving the city behind us....we also saw to Katie's excitement snow (old snow but none the less SNOW) frozen lakes and ponds as we went by. Loads of ice on roads of the main roads too.
The closer we got to first stop there was more of the white stuff. Our first stop was to the Schloss (Castle) Linderhof. This is the smallest of the three castles built by King Ludwig II .
It was a smaller version of Versailles. Especially when you get to see the hall of mirrors...much more impressive as its only a room but the way the have positioned the mirrors it looks a lot longer and larger. After leaving the castle we started to walk back to the bus. Jason, Katie and Evan decided to walk through the snow to meet us back a small lake we passed. Katie made her first snow angel and Jason had a tumble in the snow.
They met up with us again and Terri and Greg both had a tumble on the ice. After buying some post cards we were back on the bus and headed to a small town called Oberammergau. It was surrounded by the Alps and many of the buildings had muriels on them depicting fairy tales of brothers grimm.
After 40min break here we headed off to Neuschwanstein Castle the one which Walt Disney copied. On arriving here we had over three hours before leaving to go back to Munich. Jason and Evan headed off to a lake Terri & Greg started to walk up the mountain to the castle.
Our tour started a 3.30 so we had about 2 hours to fill in. Katie & I waited in line for an hour to be taken up the mountain by horse and cart. The poor 2 horses had to pull up 14 of us.
Once we arrived the other 4 were waiting for us. It had started to rain and Jason mentioned it would probably snow later that evening but after we leave. We all thought it would be great to leave the castle after our tour and be greeted by snow. It was a great view from near the base of the castle over looking lakes, villages and snow skiers.
It was getting colder so found a nice warm room to wait in until our tour starts. They have on average 6000 people through the castle each day so you are allotted times. If you miss your time slot there is no chance your ticket will let you through. The main feature everyone enjoyed where all the paintings. No pictures were allowed to be taken so I told off 3 people and mentioned it to our guide. We saw the famous bridge most photos are taken from but had been closed for winter because it is far to dangerous. Ludwigs castle is magical and can see why Walt Disney copied it for his fantasy. After this we headed outside to walk back down to catch the bus. Once outside it was starting to snow and we all got excited about it. Back on the bus with 10 minutes to spare.
There was still 2 people missing by the departure time and the guide was contacting base to get permission to leave without them. Never make a German late. Fortunately they showed up 10 minutes late and we were off. Lots of sleepy people on the bus. It is a 2 hour trip back to Munich. We arrived on time at 6.40pm and decided to find dinner in the city. Came across a pub called Pauleners it was full of Germans so thought it would be good. We were right great food and beer. After this straight back to the hotel for sleep and another big day ahead.

Day 13 The Munchen Walk
Woke today half hour earlier by a text message from Greg & Terri. we are all in rooms next to each other. Went downstairs to have breakfast in the restaurant of the hotel and meet Terri & Greg. Absolutley amazing range of food to choose from Greg even found chocolate coated donuts. After about 20 mins Katie & Jason joined us for breakfast. We all discussed what to do while we are here and decided to try and find the pick up area for tomorrow to take us by bus up to the Alps.
After one of the best breakfasts so far went back to our rooms to meet back at the lobby to catch a train back to the main station where we had arrived last night. The S Bahn is under the hotel we are staying and found we could of caught it last night straight to the Holiday Inn. We weren't happy with Jason after last night debacle with the tram.
After purchasing our tickets we caught the train to Central Station found where we needed to go for tomorrow and then bought a guide book and proceeded to go on a walking tour of Munich. After passing an outside Ice Skating Ring we stopped at Shops. It was a traditional German clothing shop. Second stop shops again I didn't think we were ever going to get away from shops. This one was traditional German Gifts like Cuckoo clocks and steins. After quite a few purchases off we go again It was getting close to 12.00pm now and stopped by a clock tower that rings every 11.00am and 12.00pm. It has bells ringing a tune to the moving dispaly of Knights and German dancers a bit like our London Court clock just a lot larger.
Next we stopped at yet another shop. This one Traditional German foods Breads and dry fruits. After more purchases we stop for Katie's first German beer from a temporary German market stall and finally on our way for our walking tour.
We started at a Toy Museum quite small but interesting toys going back 3000 years. After this we headed for gardens passing the famous beer house Hofbräuhaus am Platzl. Katie went in really needing to go once she came out couldn't wait until we went back on a tour there Saturday Night. We headed over to some gardens and passed the Munich Residenz. We started heading towards Isar River which flows through Munchen.
We passed a small fast flowing creek and then a larger one which had people surfing on the crest of waves formed by the bridge. They took turns of about 30 secs each and then drop away for the next person. This sport started in the mid 70's. After this headed towards the Isar River and had a nice walk on the way back to the hotel to get ready for the Christmas Markets at night. It was more magical with lights darkeness and colder weather. so many baubles to choose from and loads of traditional European ornaments....unfortunately a lot were wooden and we weren't sure if we could get them back to Australia....
We had more yummy food, beer, mulled wine, nuts and chocolate marshmallows...my favorite, they are also very large but extremely fluffy . Greg and Katie bought toffee apples which were very nice also.
We left just as most were shutting for the night and headed back to the hotel as we had a early start for the next day.
