Day 4 Fog Over Water

Katie did not wake up well today, she picked up a cold. So first stop was Boot's (chemist) for a bag full of medicine and then headed off to Buckingham Palace for changing of the guard. Our book in the apartment said the event was every odd day, it was wrong. Its tomorrow and we can't go, so it will have to wait until after Christmas!!

So it was the consensus of our little group that we would head down to Harrods for morning tea before heading off to the major destination of the day. As we were about to set off down Knightsbridge Road, we did get a little taste of the changing of the guard. A parade of extremely huge horses and riders all dressed up in their bright red. Of course they had a police escort in the form of riders as well, their horses are just as big! And just as beautiful.

BOWER BIRDS OF WELLARD
As we tottled down Knightsbridge in the general direction of Harrods - after checking the direction with Map Boy first - we hit the shops.
Clothes, SHOES, Clothes, SHOES and SWAROVSKI!!! So Sharon and I just had to stop at each place and check it out. Along our travels we also came across the Ugg Australia Shop. Now, after entering we found out the prices were expensive, and at a closer look at these beautiful boots we found a nice little sticker that says "Made in Vietnam". Huh, not so much Australian at all.

When we finally made it down the street, Evan aka Map Boy points out that we don't have a lot of time before we have to head for the next destination. Sharon and I were looking forward to a little bit of a snack at Harrods, but okay we can go with the flow. So we entered the shop and headed straight through to the food halls. Bypassing all of the handbags (one of my favorite things to buy), not even attempting to check any of the prices.
We breezed through the chocolates and straight to the patisserie. Gathered our little baggies of goodies and off we went to the Tube and the next stop,

MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF FOG OVER WATER
The idea was to head over to Greenwich to show me the river Themes and this great little pub that Sharon has been to twice before. So we reach Westminster Pier to catch a ferry, only for the attendant to turn around and say, "There is too much fog, our ferries aren't running at the moment. But you can try the company up at Embankment Pier."
Evan turns around after politely saying thank you, even though it really wasn't the answer that we were looking for. Up to the next pier it is.

"Hi ho, hi ho, off to the next pier we go!"
Arrived at Embankment after a nice walk along the Thames with blue skies and a little warmth. Went to the City Clipper booth and asked for tickets, no sorry to much fog won't be running until possibly 3.30pm. Try the next booth they are still running thanked the woman went to the next one. So asked the attendant. I'm after three tickets to go up to Greenwich thanks. Sorry next ferry isn't for another 1 1/2 hours but does not leave here, only from Westminster where we just came from. Thanked him and said we will catch a train. Consulted the map and we were near Embankment station so off to get a train to the DLR line ( Docklands Light Rail ).

The DLR started from Tower Gateway a short walk from Tower Hill tube station. These trains are overland and are driverless. Bit freaky when it pulls up with a 6 year old child in the front seat where the driver should be. The train goes through a lot of suburban London which most people would know from English programs that show run down tenement housing. As we get closer to Canary Wharf and the fog is getting heavier this area has been rebuilt and is extremely modern with tall office building the DLR runs through them and canals all around. The DLR goes under the Thames river and emerges in Greenwich. We get off at Cutty Sark station and head towards the old Royal Naval College to show Katie where the last major scene was filmed for the current Thor movie.
At this stage the fog is extremely dense and we understand why the Ferries are not running at the moment. We decide if the Ferries run later on we will catch one back to London.

Found a gateway out of the college to walk up to the Trafalgar Tavern for lunch. Visibility over the Thames is now about 5m. Walked into a very nice warm and cosy Trafalgar Tavern on the banks of the Thames.
Ordered our drinks, Sharon & Katie found a table next to a radiator over looking the now extreme foggy Thames. After lunch and the fog still not lifting walked back through the Naval College to some markets and a lollie shop. Back on the DLR and decided to take Katie back to the apartment to get some rest instead of her going out that night to catch up with Jade.

Headed off after shower and rugging up, also making sure Katie had taken some more drugs and leaving her the mobile number in case she feels worse.
Made our way to St Paul's station and a short walk up Cheapside ( Map Boys favourite word ) to Bread Street to meet Jason.  He was already there out side the restaurant ( Burgers and lobster) .  Jade arrived not much after us. Big hugs all around.  Went inside to get a table and was told it was a 40 minute wait.  So Jason put his name down and gave his mobile number .  we left to find a pub to have a drink.....the first two where totally packed....went to a wine bar and that was closed for a private function, needless to say this is why the pubs close by were packed....plus it was feeling that the whole day wasn't just going to go smoothly....lol  Finally found one but we had to take drinks outside as it was sooooo crowded....
Jason was surprised when I asked for a baileys on the rocks!!  so lovely seeing Jade and listening to her and Jason talk about their drinking nights out....lol Oh to be young again....no not really!!

Made our way back to the restaurant again and was then told it would be another  20 - 30 min more ...we weren't happy.  as she then said that at the beginning she said it would be an hours wait .  No it wasn't we said ....so any how we waited in the bar.  They came up not much longer and said that a group was leaving soon as they had paid.   But no they weren't leaving anytime soon.....they just sat drinking water and talking.  After another 10 min Jason actually went up to them and said I know you've already paid and your only drinking water , plus we've been waiting 1 1/2 hours for this table.   Nope they weren't moving!!  but very impressed he did it!! Another 5 min and Evans tummy grumbling he said is there anywhere else we can go???  Jade mentioned somewhere else close by and off Jason went to see if they had a table....he was back with in three min saying the line was around the corner.  But mentioned that there was a table that had cleared behind us and went and told the ladies at the front taking names....I think by this stage as we were going to leave they hurried up and got the table ready for us....thank goodness.....:)

Only 3 things on the menu to choose from...Lobster in a shell, lobster roll or a beef burger.  £20 per course.  Jade had lobster in the shell, Jason and Evan had the rolls and I had the burger with out the bread with bacon and cheese.....passed 1/2 to Jade....all came with Frites and salad.  Actually very nice meat in the burger.....decided not to have dessert...at this stage wasn't sure I would be eating breakfast!!!  said goodbye to Jade with photos and making plans to go dress/ shoe shopping with her after Christmas!!
Jason walked us to our train station where we parted ways with hugs and goodnights.
Got back to the apartment to find Katie snoozing on the couch and still not feeling the best.  Into Mummy mode again....take some more tablets and go to bed.....:)
Hopefully day 5 will go to plan.
By Katie, Evan & Sharon
